Medan - Unimpressed with Hermes Palace Hotel

  • First Impressions - Having a certain amount of expectations from the name of the hotel, we were disappointed that the lobby of the Hermes Palace Hotel was dim and small. Also, while we had requested for early check-in, indicating our time of arrival at the hotel of 10 am, we were informed that the rooms have not been cleaned and check-in was only at 1 pm. While I would think that they would then offer us the first room available given we had arrived, we truly only managed to check-in at 1 pm.
  • Amenities - While waiting for check-in, we were not able to call the motorcycle rental as the staff at reception informed us they did not have a land line to dial out. We had to go about getting a prepaid calling card on our own, with no clue what it's called in Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Location - The Hermes Palace Hotel is located at a big intersection and within walking distance to Merdeka Walk. This is perhaps a plus point for travellers who would like a taste of the nightlife and local music.
  • Service - The service provided was bare minimum and we found the bellboy service to be unprofessional. While trying to get a taxi to the Pinang Baris bus terminal, the bellboy insisted we get into the waiting taxi, which was not a Bluebird - as paranoid tourists, we had learned that Bluebird was the only reliable taxi service and did not want to risk a meter-less taxi. Instead of taking our concerns into consideration, the bellboy seemed more friendly with the taxi driver and tried to persuade us that it was okay.
Final Verdict

Wouldn't really recommend this hotel as there are better hotels for only slightly more.
